2016 Accomplishments

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to stop and recognize the achievements that the hard work of all of our volunteers and members brought us.

This was an all around outstanding year, capped off by the chapter winning ISSA International’s prestigious Chapter of the Year Award. This is a great honor and reflects well on all of us and our collective effort to making this a great, vibrant security community.


In terms of our operations and growth, the chapter…

  • Welcomed 71 new members
  • Welcomed 15 new sponsors
  • Welcomed 4 new directors to the board (first completely full board in recent years!)
  • Added a new Technology Director position to the organization, to define and manage our IT services and tools
  • Met our 2016 membership goal of growing by 15% to 185 active members
  • Exceeded our sponsorship goals by 50%, ending the year with 22 sponsors

In our programs and services areas, the chapter…

  • Held numerous events, including:
    • 6 Chapter meetings with post meeting networking
    • 4 MN ISSA AfterHours events
    • An inaugural MN ISSA Holiday Social Gathering
    • Kicking off our first local Women In Security SIG
  • Provided over 15 hours of high quality, CPE-worthy education and countless hours of peer networking and socializing
  • Gave away security books and other great prizes at all events
  • Simplified registration and CPE management using EventBrite
  • Co-Led a CISSP Study Group with over 40 participants, including many who subsequently passed their exams
  • Awarded scholarships to aspiring IT/Security students:
    • $500 scholarship via Aspirations in Computing
    • $1000 scholarship via Century College Foundation
    • Multiple ISSA student memberships
  • Helped organize the Secure360 conference
  • Helping plan the inaugural Student360 conference in 2017
  • Promoted security with booths at multiple local conferences
  • Obtained exclusive discounts for our members to over a half dozen conferences and local events
  • Supported ISSA International through:
    • Chairing Security Education and Awareness SIG
    • Participating in planning: Women In Security SIG, International Conference, Chapter Support Committee
    • Multiple directors attending the Chapter Leaders Summit at the ISSA International Conference
  • Launched a completely new website, with better navigation and more resources
  • Increased our social media presence significantly
  • Listed over 20 openings for members on our job board

The Board of Directors sincerely thanks all the volunteers throughout the chapter and community – whether on the board, on committees and teams, speaking, training, setting up and tearing down, and much more. Without you, the fantastic success of the last year would not have been possible.  Keep up the good work!!
